Light, Temperature and Climate: Where Aroma Comes From

Basil is a warm-climate crop and it behaves like one. These are the numbers that matter:

  • Air temperature: 20-27 C (68-80 F) day, not below 18 C (65 F) at night. Below 10 C (50 F) basil suffers chilling injury — leaves blacken within a day or two.

How to Harvest Basil: The Cut-and-Come-Again Technique

This single section decides whether you get two harvests or eight from the same plant. Basil branches from the pair of buds sitting just above each leaf node, so where you cut determines how the plant regrows.

  1. Wait for 6-8 true leaves and 3-4 node pairs before the first cut — typically 28-35 days after transplant. Cutting a plant that is too young stunts it permanently.
  2. Cut the top third of the stem, roughly 5 mm (0.2 in) above a healthy leaf node pair. Never cut mid-internode — the stub dies back and invites rot.
  3. Always leave at least 2-3 node pairs with leaves on the plant. Removing more than 60-70% of the foliage at once collapses regrowth speed.
  4. Pinch out flower buds the moment you see them. Once basil flowers it diverts energy to seed, leaves shrink and the flavour turns bitter and soapy. Weekly bud-pinching walks are non-negotiable in commercial production.
  5. Harvest in the morning, before lights ramp up or before the greenhouse heats. Turgid morning leaves survive handling and shipping far better than afternoon leaves.
  6. Use clean, sharp scissors or snips and sanitise between towers. Downy mildew and Fusarium travel on tools and hands.
  7. Replace the plant after 4-8 cuts or when stems go woody and regrowth slows — usually 3-5 months. Rotate a fresh seedling into the hole the same day to keep the tower full.

Mint, oregano and thyme follow the same logic: cut above a node, never scalp the plant. Parsley and chives are different — harvest the outer stems at the base and leave the central crown growing.

Post-Harvest Handling: Do Not Refrigerate Basil Like Lettuce

More basil profit is lost in the two hours after harvest than anywhere else in the crop cycle. Basil is chilling-sensitive: store it in a standard 2-4 C (36-39 F) cold room with your lettuce and the leaves will develop black necrotic patches within 24-48 hours.

  • Hold basil at 12-15 C (54-59 F), never below 10 C (50 F). A dedicated cool room or an insulated box in a shaded space beats a cold room.
  • Do not hydro-cool or ice basil. Wet leaves plus cold equals blackening and bacterial breakdown.
  • Sell cut stems in water or in vented clamshells, packed shallow. Never compress basil — bruised leaves blacken at the crease.
